A two-year varsity letterman in basketball, Gerry Karczewski enjoyed two-straight Channel League Championships with the San Marcos “Running Royals” going 24-1 in 1980 and 26-1 in 1981. At one point, the 1981 team (which included fellow 2015 inductee, Jon Korfas) was ranked as the fourth-best high school basketball team in the country and was a finalist for the CIF Division 4A – Southern Section championship. During that season, Karczewski was named to both First Team All-CIF Southern Section and First Team Channel League. He also won the Channel League scoring title in 1981.
In addition to basketball, Karczewski played baseball at San Marcos. Senior year, his Royals took second in the Channel League in 1981 while he was named Honorable Mention All-Channel League. After graduating from San Marcos High School, Karczewski attended Santa Barbara City College where he played basketball for two seasons with the Vaqueros. In his sophomore year, Karczewski’s Vaqueros took the Western State Conference Championship. Karczewski was the team captain and he was named a Junior College All-American, First Team All-State and MVP/First Team All-Conference. Karczewski rounded out his collegiate hoops career as a scholarship player for St. Mary’s in Moraga, Calif., from 1983-85. Karczewski is a member of the San Marcos Athletic Hall of Fame and Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame.
Graduating from St. Mary’s in 1985 with a B.S. in business administration, Karczewski went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1989. A true student-athlete, Karczewski graduated near the top of his class at San Marcos, was a member of the Dean’s List at SBCC and St. Mary’s and graduated “magna cum laude” in the top 2 percent of his class at the USD School of Law.
During his playing days, Karczewski played for Santa Barbara Court of Champions’ coaches: Maury Halleck, Frank Carbajal, Jim Eyen and Sal Rodriguez. Karczewski was also teammates with fellow Santa Barbara Court of Champions’ 2015 inductee, Jon Korfas at San Marcos HS, and 2014 inductee, Brian Shaw at St. Mary’s College.
