Santa Barbara, California – March 22, 2009
Butch Breeden is set to begin his first season with the Santa Barbara Breakers since retiring from coaching over 10 years ago. Breeden will be in his first stint coaching at the professional level, as he will be assisting Curt Pickering with coaching responsibilities. Breeden is excited and nervous, “coming in as a rookie, I’ve never coached at this level.”
Butch spent 25 years as Head Coach of boys Varsity Basketball at Carpinteria High School. During this time Breeden was an as sistant coach for Westmont College from 1985-87, gaining a new perspective of the game at a higher level.
Other than basketball, Breeden is an avid golfer and is currently the executive director of The First Tee Central Coast. The First Tee is a youth development organization that teaches life skills to young people ages 7 to 17 through golf.
President/ Head Coach Curt Pickering is excited about the addition of Breeden, stating: “Butch has been a pillar of the community for many years. He has impacted so many lives in a positive way. The Breakers are fortunate that he is available and willing to give his time of passion to the game and the basketball people he will be co-mingling with. He is to the Breakers what Bill Bertka is to the Lakers.”
Breeden has been away from the game of basketball for over 10 years now, but has admitted “I missed the game,” Butch stated, “and I’m looking forward to getting back into it.”
