The Santa Barbara Breakers met their “Makers” when they faced the Bayi Chinese Army Team on Monday, September 21, 2009. The Army Team, comprised of 4 Chinese National Players, including former NBA Star Wang ZhuZhu, stomped the Breakers 81-62. Despite a close 16-22 first quarter deficit, the Breakers were out-executed in the second quarter 24-19 and a halftime trailing score of 46-35. Early in the third quarter, the Breakers cut the lead to 54-50, leading to an Army time out.
Bayi re-upped the lead with precisioned half court offense and allowing the Breakers just one shot per possession and finished with an 8-0 run to close out the period leading 62-50. With whistles (referee’s) mysteriously vanishing at one end of the floor, the Army Team found themselves in a Parade Procession at their free throw line at the other end of the floor. The Army finished with a 30-15 free line attempt advantage along with a 49-36 rebounding performance. Wang ZhuZhu (7’1) led the Army with 16 points and was assisted by a lineup size of 7’2, 6’10, 6’9 and 6’3. The Breakers received balanced scoring from Chris Keller’s (Northwest College, WA) 12 points and Perrin Johnson’s 11. The Breakers finished the Tournament in a three-way tie for first place with a 2-1 record. Leonard Mosley, injured in the third quarter and did not return to the game, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
