In a season filled with “firsts,” the Santa Barbara Breakers will add one more in Saturday’s regular-season pro basketball finale at SBCC’s Sports Pavilion. The Breakers, whose IBL roster includes four ex-NBA players, will take on the Vancouver (Wash.) Volcanoes in their last two home games on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Saturday’s game will be televised locally on Cox 8 at 11 p.m., coach Curt Pickering announced. The contest will be shown again Sunday morning at 9 a.m., and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at noon. John Martony will handle the play-by-play duties for TV and KEY-3 sports anchor Gerry Fall will call both games on radio, beginning at 6:55 p.m.
Santa Barbara, which joined the high-scoring IBL this year, is coming off an impressive 5-0 road trip that included two wins in Las Vegas and three at Chico. The Breakers (13-5) have won seven straight, outscoring
their opponents by an average of 145-129. Billy Knight tossed in 28 points, including the game-tying 3-pointer in regulation, in last Sunday’s 161-159 overtime victory over Chico. The Breakers have scored 161 points three times this year. Toby Bailey leads Santa Barbara with a 24.3 scoring average, followed by Fred Vinson (18.9) and Trayvon Lathan (17.4).
The Breakers sizzled from the 3-point line on Sunday, draining 21 of 29 for a team-record 72.4 percent. Vancouver (5-14) has dropped four of its last five. The Breakers will travel to Portland, Ore., on June 29-30 and July 1 for the IBL West playoffs.
